Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, we members of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development also wanted to emphasise the potential importance of research for the entire agri-food system. This is not simply research leading to innovation in the laboratory, but research that can produce concrete results in the field.
We felt it necessary to emphasise that research can provide solutions for the people of the world. We are facing population growth with the well-founded expectation that there will be a 70% increase in demand for food by 2050. We have to provide answers to this problem, and research will play a role. It must also be able to offer increasing support to the demands of a clean environment. This means the rise in population must be accompanied by environmental protection, renewable energy and reduced levels of CO
production."@en1
