"Mr President, the arrest and imprisonment of Ales Bialatski on 4 August is just another example of the appalling abuse of human rights and the criminal justice system. Hopefully, in some respects it might be the last dying acts of a doomed regime because, as we have seen with the Arab Spring and the fall of dictator Gaddafi, people are now beginning to rise up against dictators. Certainly that is to be encouraged.
I also think that having such a wonderful human rights defender imprisoned on the basis of tax evasion is totally and utterly unacceptable. If he were accused of murder or rape or something else, then maybe there would be a small excuse for putting him in prison prior to trial. In this situation that is not the case. We should set a deadline and, after that, put in graduated sanctions so that this regime is brought to book."@en1
