"Mr President, I am perturbed, but not surprised, by the lack of leadership shown by the External Action Service on this issue. I have listened very carefully to the representative of the Presidency and there are many issues we agree on, principally the need to get back to the negotiating table, because it is only there that a full and lasting settlement can actually come forward.
However, despite endless meetings and the lateness of the hour, we still have no position from the EU. President Obama this week reiterated the US position that if this issue reaches the Security Council they will use their veto in that forum. However, the representative of the Presidency – and I hope I quote correctly – says that only the EU can play a useful role in bridging the gap.
Surely we are entitled to greater clarity and a much more direct answer. Do the Polish Presidency and the Commission believe that the declaration of an independent Palestinian state at the UN will contribute to a positive outcome of the negotiations and stability in the region?"@en1
