"Madam President, I welcome this debate just as tensions in Syria are escalating from one day to the next. It is unacceptable for Syrian security forces to take control of the hospitals in conflict zones. Evacuating patients and disrupting the administration of medicines is a crime in itself.
I should mention the risk of the tensions spoiling relations between the various religious communities. This country is renowned as a melting pot of cultures which have lived together in harmony for centuries. Any conflict between the religious groups would be dangerous for the course of events in the country, as well as for the region’s stability.
I must re-emphasise the abuses being committed by the government against demonstrators and members of the opposition. The acts of violent suppression committed by the Syrian regime are a serious violation of fundamental rights, especially the right of free expression."@en1
