"( ) I voted for this report on the activities of the Committee on Petitions in 2010. The timetable of activities of the Committee on Petitions is not established on the basis of the European Commission’s legislative programme, but is set by the public in the exercise of its right to petition Parliament. This is the overview provided by the annual report, a complete picture of the work of the Committee on Petitions, through a series of statistics on the number of petitions received, completed or handled by the committee, or statistics on the countries or issues in question, making this an important quantitative tool in assessing the work of the committee. The report also examines the progress made in implementing previous recommendations aimed at improving the work of this committee. I agree with the need for the Committee on Petitions to forge closer working links with similar committees in the national and regional parliaments of the Member States, in order to promote mutual understanding of petitions on European issues, and to gain an insight into the various working methods of national committees on petitions so that the Committee on Petitions of Parliament is in a position to take a conscious and farsighted decision when rejecting a petition on grounds of competence issues."@en1
