"The Doha Round was launched in 2001 with the objectives of creating new trading opportunities, strengthening multilateral trade rules, addressing current imbalances in the trading system and putting trade at the service of sustainable development, with an emphasis on the economic integration of developing countries, especially the least developed countries. A multilateral system, based on more just and equitable rules, can contribute to fair and free trade at the service of the development of all continents.
The WTO has a key role to play in ensuring better management of globalisation, more equitable distribution of its benefits and well balanced economic growth. Due to the persistent deadlock in the original architecture and objectives of the DDA, it is now more necessary than ever to resume the debate on the future functioning of the WTO with a possible reform of the new multilateral trading system. The Commission must consult proactively with Parliament on a shared vision of the architecture of a future global trading system. The WTO must consistently and urgently tackle new global challenges in which trade plays a part, such as food security, energy, sustainable development and Aid for Trade, even if the DDA is not concluded."@en1
