"In many areas, the European Parliament is consistently relegated to playing second fiddle. One good example is the appointment of new European Commissioners. This is why, despite the minor role allocated to us in the Treaties, we need to do our utmost as representatives of the European people to assess the quality of the candidates chosen by the Member States and presented as a single package, so as to do more than simply formally approve the College as a whole. These hearings constitute a unique opportunity to vet the quality of the proposed Commissioners. That is why I supported the proposals made on improving the organisation of the hearings and maximising the opportunities for MEPs to verify whether the candidates do really meet the requirements for the portfolio that they would be given. Each political group would then need to have the courage to decide whether or not the candidates had passed the entry exam."@en1
