"An EU framework is needed for the integration of national energy markets into a single market. Unfair practices on the wholesale energy markets affect price levels so that they are unable to do their job of sending a clear signal to power stations, households and enterprises regarding the optimum use of energy. Instead these practices may result in great price fluctuations, leading to higher energy prices for the end-consumer (individuals and businesses) and weaken the confidence of potential investors in energy infrastructure products. Transparency on the energy markets is a necessary prerequisite if the EU energy market is to be further integrated. For this reason, REMIT operates as a key instrument for achieving the European Council’s target of completing the internal energy market by 2014. In order to prevent further liberalisation of the energy markets, this regulation should not apply to very small market operators.
This will help new operators avoid excessive obstacles when entering the market. Market manipulation should also be sanctioned uniformly throughout the EU. I believe that after some of the changes proposed during the legislative process have been implemented, the directive should be capable of fulfilling its task and increasing transparency, integrity and stability on the wholesale energy market."@en1
