"Mr President, I welcome the report in that it is a long overdue forensic analysis of the scope, powers and relevance of the Committee on Petitions. One of the problems that we constantly refer to is the perception that Europe and the EU project are remote from our 500 million citizens, and one vital instrument in addressing that particular deficit and bridging the gap is the Petitions Committee, where individuals or communities can come before the Committee, have their grievances heard and hopefully redressed.
The statistics speak for themselves. In 2010, 1 655 petitions were received. I welcome in particular recital F. I have had tremendous success thanks to the Committee in highlighting neglect by two local authorities in Ireland – one in respect of flooding, the other in respect of road surfaces which led to deaths – and getting action.
Secondly, I welcome recital L which highlights the lack of action on the part of Member States. We have to make citizens more aware of the Committee on Petitions. It is a very useful instrument."@en1
