However, we should remember that we are responsible for earlier decisions and we should choose our areas of expenditure carefully. I am afraid that the Council’s proposals for cuts in areas such as lifelong learning, youth on the move and support for small and medium-sized businesses will only provide apparent savings. In effect, we are running the risk that strategic European objectives will not be achieved. I am also concerned at the proposed budget cuts for agencies which in some cases would contradict their increased terms of reference, as in the case of Frontex, for example, and would not guarantee them sufficient funding to fulfil their new responsibilities."@en1
