"Madam President, we have a paradox nowadays between the need to control polluting emissions and the tendency to increase consumption at a time of globalisation. We are looking on helplessly at the disastrous impact of climate change, but hesitate at going ahead and adopting more concrete measures. The reservations featuring in the Copenhagen and Cancun agreements are conclusive. We remain ever hopeful that future conferences will adopt a firm stance on this point. Europe provides an example of an initiative for combating climate change. I think that the Commission’s role at the moment is to initiate a specific strategy for gradually reducing the production and consumption of polluting substances. The framework programmes for research and innovation could help identify alternative solutions for gradually replacing current technologies with innovative, non-polluting technologies. I am a chemical engineer. Chemistry helps us a great deal nowadays in our daily life, but it can also kill us. We need to use good judgment to go beyond making wonderful declarations of intent and urgently proceed with taking concrete measures."@en1
