"The principle of equality is, along with freedom, one of the pillars of the democratic rule of law. It is because I believe in the importance of the principle of equality that I believe men and women deserve the same opportunities, and should enjoy the same conditions in the world of business. Europe needs entrepreneurs, whether they be men or women. However, as entrepreneurship does not impose itself, we have to create conditions for it ourselves. With regard to women, this is achieved by removing the barriers that still remain for women – such as, for example, the negative impact of motherhood on career progression – and not through the establishment by law. I would add that I do not believe this to be the proper place for reintroducing the idea of quotas for women in business management and leadership positions, which is an issue voted on by Parliament during the last sitting."@en1
