"Everyone still remembers the oil slick caused by the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico. The adoption of this report was important, insofar as the European Parliament is tackling the safety of these offshore oil and gas activities. Contingency plans need to be developed, and it was also important to take a stand in favour of extending the scope of the Environmental Liability Directive so that the ‘polluter pays’ principle and strict liability apply to all damage caused to marine waters and biodiversity, with the result that oil and gas companies can be held accountable for any and all environmental damage they might cause."@en1
