"Older women face discrimination in the labour market based on both their gender and age. This, combined with other factors, increases their vulnerability to poverty in their old age. Shorter or interrupted careers due to childbirth or caring for others and a persistent and significant gender pay gap, which only increases with age, also contribute to this fact. As family caregivers, women often take more flexible jobs that come with lower wages and few, if any, benefits. Frequent job changes also make it harder to qualify for decent pensions. The occurrence of part-time work is four times higher among women than men All of these factors combine and have a huge impact on women’s ability to accumulate pension entitlements for their old age. Additionally, women live longer, which makes them especially vulnerable during retirement. They outlive their husbands due to a higher life expectancy. Living for longer, and with less pension entitlements, means older women are at a greater risk of poverty than men. More must be done to address these issues and to ensure that women are protected from discrimination both during their working lives and on into their retirement."@en1
