"Fishing activity in the South Pacific has, until now, been managed by the two Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs): the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission and the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission. Fishing of other types of resources was unregulated, other than in the exclusive economic zones (EEZs) of coastal states. To fill this gap, and given that there is fishing activity both in the EEZs and on the high seas, the governments of Australia, Chile and New Zealand have decided to launch a process of international consultations on the establishment of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation. The purpose of this legislative act is to allow ratification of the text of the convention concluded in 2010 by the EU through a draft Council decision. I believe that the EU should have a presence within all RFMOs, both to defend its priorities concerning sustainable fisheries management and to defend the interests of its fishing fleet, so I think this document should be adopted by Parliament."@en1
