"The free movement of people within the European Union and its area of freedom, security and justice is one of the cornerstones of the EU, enabling free movement within the area for almost half a billion people in the continent of Europe. The EU must therefore include among its priorities the establishment of a comprehensive European migration policy based on security, responsibility, solidarity and, of course, human rights. In my opinion, a high level of border control and surveillance must be implemented consistently in the interests of protecting EU citizens, and I therefore agree that the Frontex Agency’s mandate should be adjusted in order to boost its operational capacities, and for measures to be adopted that are adequate, effective and respectful of fundamental rights.
I firmly believe that, for the purpose of effective protection of EU citizens and their values against cross-border crime and other illegal activities, the Frontex Agency should enhance its cooperation with Europol and Eurojust, particularly in the area of cross-border crime. I would like to conclude by emphasising that cooperation between Member States must be based on the principle of solidarity with the Member States on the borders, which, for geographical and demographic reasons, are exposed to substantial and disproportionate migration flows on their borders."@en1
