"Faced with the continued volatility of prices and the risk of possible raw material shortages, it is important for the European Union to propose a strong and effective strategy that will guarantee the more sustainable use and the improved supply of these precious natural resources. I believe that in a climate of great economic uncertainty around the world, it is necessary to deliver an industrial policy for European businesses that recognises the vital importance of having access to raw materials. Too often, in fact, Europe falls victim to financial speculation by exporting countries that have a monopoly over resources that are crucial to the aerospace, automotive, chemical and construction industries, for example, and therefore cause their prices to become extremely unstable. Some estimates show that demand in the EU for a number of essential raw materials could actually treble by 2030, thus compounding the current situation. We must therefore act fast, strengthen our trade strategy and propose concrete, achievable measures, such as the reintroduction of extraction activities in the EU and recycling. In this connection, I must stress that waste electrical and electronic equipment often conceals a real treasure trove of metals that ought to be made accessible through recycling."@en1
