"Mr President, Europe is faced with both challenges and opportunities when it comes to raw materials. The challenge needs to be turned into an opportunity which will revitalise Europe’s industrial power. A European industrial innovation strategy is needed, aimed at using Europe’s raw materials efficiently. Making the ways that European industries use raw materials more innovative will contribute significantly to Europe’s competitiveness, sustainability and supply security.
The Union must develop partnerships with third countries and step up negotiations on raw materials. This can help establish an international regulatory platform which will ensure that the Union is supplied with the necessary raw materials from third countries.
The Commission must carry out a study which will identify European industries’ import dependency and the threats to the raw materials supply, and also assess current and future prices. The study will enable industries and research institutions to engage in long-term projects and investments."@en1
