"Mr President, I would like to thank our Commissioner, Mr Tajani, and the rapporteur, who has devoted a great deal of time to drafting what is truly an extremely good report.
We are dealing, today, with an extremely important subject – the raw materials which are needed by Europe and the world. At the moment we are talking about an effective strategy which will establish new courses of action both for the consumption and the sustainable use of our resources and raw materials. Natural resources are currently the basis of the operation of all economies, both at world and at European level, and they affect the quality of our lives. Therefore, we must ensure that the model of consumption and production which is accepted today is a standard which can be used, too, by future generations, so that it will not be the case that we simply use resources but leave little to those who come after us. The high consumption of raw materials is also an obstruction to European economies in terms of being competitive, low on emissions and up to date. This is why it is so important to deal with wastes, which contain a large amount of very valuable raw materials. Moving to a green economy will require significant spending, but will also require social and economic changes. It is also essential to ensure integrated action on the development of modern technologies, the power industry, industry in general and environmental protection. Policies and strategies must be focused as soon as possible on limiting emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere. Therefore it is important that we prepare a strategy which is based on what we have received from our fathers and which passes that legacy on to the generations which come after us."@en1
