"Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, the Commission will uphold its binding commitment to ensure a positive outcome to the Doha negotiations, and we are also delighted at the expressions of support received from this House.
Obviously we would have preferred a much stronger multilateral commitment than the one that exists now, and a positive outcome to these negotiations would certainly be excellent news not only for us in Europe but also for the rest of the world economy.
I can assure you that over the next 10 weeks Commissioner De Gucht and his staff will step up their efforts and contacts, and the Commissioner has instructed me to tell you that he will be pleased to hold further talks on the future of Doha in the Committee on International Trade. Unfortunately, as the Presidency said, much to his regret, Commissioner De Gucht has had to leave the Chamber in order to catch a flight to South Africa for the summit and the bilateral trade talks.
We can only reiterate the importance of Doha when it comes to keeping the world markets open, improving the functioning of markets that are already open, and opening the market still further in line with the requirements of a world economy in the era of globalisation, with a number of steadily growing stakeholders, and in a context in which not everyone carries the same economic weight. However, I repeat that the Commission will do everything in its power to ensure that the economy can benefit from the conclusion of the Doha Agreements."@en1
