"Madam President, the crisis of profitability of capital, its unprecedented degree of centralisation and concentration and the associated downward trend in profit margins reflect dynamics in the advance of capitalism that have long been studied and described.
Free trade, over the last two decades, has been one of the pillars of the neo-liberal response to the systemic crisis in capitalism. It is a response that panders to the interests of major corporations and the major powers, by seeking to ensure that they have access to new markets, greater availability of manpower, a reduction in unit labour costs and easy access to raw materials, that is, better conditions for exploiting workers and nature.
This has meant, and still means more profits for those major corporations, without doubt; but for the workers and people the promised wonders of free trade, much vaunted by its advocates who are well represented in the Commission and this Parliament, have never materialised; on the contrary, what we are faced with is the destruction and relocation of productive activities and jobs, an attack on social and employment rights, the ruin of millions of small producers and many small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as the destruction of the environment and natural resources. This is the path of Doha. It is a path which urgently needs to be redirected in the interests of the workers and the peoples of Europe and the world.
International trade must be geared towards establishing fair and equitable relationships that are mutually beneficial; it must be based on relationships of complementarity, and not on competition between producer countries and the workforce. It must support the development of peoples and countries, and not just a few economic and financial groups."@en1
