"Thirteen million people currently depend on food aid provided by the European Union within the framework of the common agricultural policy (CAP). The Court of Justice of the European Union has found that this aid cannot be provided from the budget of the CAP. The Commission, following this decision, rushed to propose for 2012 a drastic cut in the funding for food aid, from EUR 500 million to EUR 113 million in 2012. This decision is unacceptable at a time when austerity policies are having the effect of increasing poverty. The European Parliament, in general, has come out against this drastic cut. It has stressed the consequences of brutally bringing to an end in this way a scheme of food aid for the most vulnerable citizens in the European Union, and has called for a rapid amendment of the regulations governing the scheme for food distribution to the most deprived persons as a way out of this legal impasse. I particularly welcome the adoption of the amendment by my group, the Confederal Group of the European United Left – Nordic Green Left, calling for the sum of EUR 500 million to be maintained for food aid to deprived persons."@en1
