"Combating poverty, social exclusion and malnutrition is of vital importance to social cohesion and European integration. It is also one of the five priorities of the EU 2020 strategy. Today there are 79 million people living in poverty and around 30 million undernourished people in the EU. In this context, the EU cannot compromise a scheme which has proven itself to be of vital importance to the poorest people and which ensures that more than 440 000 tonnes of food are distributed to 18 million people. I therefore agree with this resolution, highlighting the worry of the risk of worsening rural poverty and the collapse of rural communities, as well as the importance of a healthy, high-quality diet for children, especially in view of their developmental and educational needs."@en1
