"According to data provided by the Commission, 43 million people in the EU are at risk of food poverty, making aid programmes essential for providing them with a minimum level of subsistence. Because of this, it is hard to understand why, at a time when the crisis is threatening to increase the number of people living in poverty, the Commission is proposing to cut funding for the food aid scheme from EUR 500 million in 2011 to just EUR 113 million in 2012. I am therefore joining with the various political groups urging the Commission to rethink its decision to cut food aid, and draw attention to the fact that such aid is increasingly necessary and important. The need to reduce expenditure cannot justify a lack of social sensitivity, especially when it comes to the poorest and most vulnerable members of our society."@en1
