Strong calls are being made in some Arab countries for political, economic and social reforms aimed at achieving genuine democracy, fighting corruption and nepotism, ensuring respect for the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms, reducing social inequalities and creating better economic and social conditions. Some governments have, however, reacted by means of the violent repression of these popular demonstrations. Bearing in mind that freedom of thought, conscience and religion is a fundamental human right which should be guaranteed by the authorities, we strongly condemn the violent repression of peaceful demonstrators; we express our solidarity with the peoples of these countries and we strongly support their legitimate democratic aspirations. Furthermore, we believe that the EU should use the numerous instruments at its disposal to discourage such actions, and should impose restrictive measures on those countries and the authorities responsible for the violent repression against the civilian population, suspending all preparations for new bilateral cooperation programmes. Lastly, we call on the international community to make further efforts to sustain and encourage the process of political reform in the countries of North Africa and the Middle East."@en1
