"Mr President, however much I value the autonomy and rights of participation of the Member States, I am also an enthusiastic supporter of the European Union. It is not a European Union for politicians or for business. Above all, it is a European Union for the citizens who live here. The clearest expression of this for the citizens is freedom of travel and freedom of movement between the Member States within the European Union. We must defend this right effectively and we must nip in the bud any attempts to restrict freedom of travel on the basis of national interest or national egotism. We must make sure that this sort of thing is stopped before it even starts. This has nothing to do with the fact that we need to ensure that the European Union’s external borders are reliably monitored and protected. Within the European Union we must not carelessly sacrifice the right to freedom of travel on the altar of political populism."@en1
