"Mr President, the changes recently proposed in the European Council intended to allegedly improve Schengen governance are inconsistent and jeopardise European citizens’ freedom of movement. The proposal poses a serious threat to the integrity of the Schengen area, which must be based on mutual trust and on solidarity between Member States. We cannot accept that the number of situations currently described as being exceptional should increase due to a new mechanism as we would be giving governments with nationalist and populist overtones the opportunity to use this mechanism to promote their anti-EU policies. We already have Denmark as an example, which is infringing both the Schengen and the principles of the Single Market, as the Commission, the guardian of the Treaties, turns a blind eye. Finally, I would like to point out to the Council that the lack of transparency and its intention to exclude Parliament from adopting the new mechanism or any other legislative proposal are unacceptable and constitute a serious violation of the Treaties."@en1
