"We need more Europe, not less. Nationalism must not gain a foothold once again in Europe. We must take a positive view of free trade, globalisation and movement across borders. We need a clearer and stronger Europe. The Berès report is visionary and forward-looking, but we have one objection: the committee wants to increase the EU budget to between 2.5 and 10% of the Member States’ combined GNI. This extreme increase is a long way from being realistic in today’s climate. We are against an extreme increase in the EU budget. The EU may need more resources for common commitments in the future, but such a change must be made in dialogue and in agreement with the citizens. Visions are good and necessary, but they must be well-anchored. Today, more than ever, the European project needs democratic legitimacy. Therefore, our proposals must be credible and feasible – not merely visionary."@en1
