"We need a more effective, not less effective Europe. Nationalism must not gain a foothold once again in Europe. We need to take a positive view of free trade, globalisation and movement across borders. The EU needs to have less power in certain areas, but greater power in others. The report is visionary and forward-looking, but I have one objection: the committee wants to increase the EU budget to between 2.5 and 10% of the Member States’ combined GNI. This extreme increase is a long way from being realistic in today’s climate. We are against an extreme increase in the EU budget. It is possible that the EU may need more resources for common commitments in the future, but such a change must be made in dialogue and in agreement with the citizens. In the current climate, it is therefore important for us to make smarter use of our existing resources. Visions are good and necessary, but they must be well-anchored. Today more than ever, the European project needs democratic legitimacy. Therefore, our proposals must be credible and feasible – not merely visionary."@en1
