"By adopting this report on EU legislation on Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE) and on related feed and food controls, the European Parliament has betrayed its moral obligation towards Europe’s citizens. It has brought an end, admittedly subject to conditions, to 15 years of prohibition. That decision was taken in 1996, following the mad cow (bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)) crisis. Today’s vote at noon (485 votes to 162) delivers a message that is diametrically opposed to the one that not only a majority of consumers, but also the livestock farmers and food distributors and manufacturers, were hoping to hear. So many of the direct stakeholders are opposed to the reintroduction of animal meal. However, nothing has changed in 15 years; the scientific uncertainties remain, especially for farmed fish, and there is nothing to ensure the effective traceability at European level of the origin of feed made from animal by-products. In conclusion, as long as the Commission does not clearly spell out that animal meal poses no food safety risk, the 27 ministers for agriculture should oppose a new food policy that Europe’s citizens no longer want."@en1
