"I voted in favour of this report because of the need for and importance of food safety. There is a need to maintain a rigorous and effective system for controlling and monitoring feed and food that can minimise risk and ensure better conditions for preventing new diseases or outbreaks in the context of the global economy, given the repercussions of infection by diseases and epidemics, specifically Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE). TSE are a family of diseases that occur in humans and animals and are characterised by the degeneration of brain tissue, giving it a ‘sponge-like’ appearance, and can potentially lead to death, as was the case with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), popularly known as ‘mad cow disease’. It is in this context that we have witnessed a significant decline in cases of TSE, resulting from action that it is important to keep up if we are to eradicate it."@en1
