"The European Parliament today voted in favour of a report on cross-border exchange of information concerning road traffic offences. Each year, 31 000 people are still killed on Europe’s roads and 300 000 seriously injured. Of these accidents, 30% are due to speed changes caused by drivers from a country other than the one in which they committed the traffic offence. What is more, charges are not brought in many cases of cross-border road traffic offences.
Parliament is therefore asking, with a view to protecting road users, that the country of origin of the driver responsible for the accident should be informed in the case of serious accidents, so that the offence can be properly punished. This is because there are still major obstacles to cross-border cooperation, including a lack of cooperation between Member States on policing. This report is therefore a first step towards the type of cross-border cooperation that already exists between Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Luxembourg."@en1
