"The regulation which has been adopted on the provision of food information to consumers is an extremely important instrument for consumers, who, thanks to the new legislation, will be able to make better-informed decisions when buying food. The new legislation means that labels used by producers will be more legible. There is no doubt that this will make it easier for consumers to choose the food products which they need in their diet. In accordance with the new legislation, the energy content and the amount of fat, saturates, carbohydrates, sugars, protein and salt has to be given on the package in the form of a legible table. The content of these ingredients has to be expressed per 100 g or per 100 ml. In addition, the content of these ingredients has to be expressed per portion of product. Labels will also have to contain information on allergenic substances. This is extremely important in view of the increasingly common problem of allergies. I hope that with the entry into force of the new legislation, consumers will pay greater attention to what they buy. I think, however, that consumers also need information campaigns on the new legislation and, in particular, about how to read some of the graphical symbols which often appear on food products."@en1
