"In May 2009, the European Commission launched an evaluation of the 1995 Data Protection Directive. A legislative proposal for amending it should also be tabled by the end of the year, without ruling out other instruments for adapting it to the new legal framework on data protection. The last 15 years have witnessed an Internet revolution and an exponential increase in the use of new technologies. Large-scale collection and processing of personal data are a consequence of the globalisation of trade. This report stresses some aspects of future reform: increased right to information; improved data transfer, particularly in the context of judicial and police cooperation; and harmonised status and powers of the national data protection authorities responsible for data protection and Internet security. I voted in favour of this report for all these reasons."@en1
