"In May 2009, the European Commission launched an evaluation of the 1995 Data Protection Directive. By the end of the year, it must present a legislative proposal to amend that directive, while also adapting other legal instruments into a new general framework for data protection. The last 15 years have been marked by the Internet revolution and, more globally, by the increasing use of new technologies. This has resulted in the collection and processing of personal data on an unprecedented scale, reinforced by the globalisation of exchanges. This report underlines some important elements of the future reform: enhancing the right to information; improving data transfer, particularly in the case of police and judicial cooperation; and harmonising the status and powers of national authorities responsible for data protection. As a fervent defender of the ‘right to be forgotten’ and making online transactions more secure, I voted in favour of this report."@en1
