"Madam President, the free movement of food is an essential aspect of a viable internal market, and that is why I supported this report. The European Union must, in future, promote the health and well-being of citizens, as well as their social and economic interests. Clear, comprehensible and easily legible food labelling is one such way that the European Union could actually have a combined impact on increasing the well-being of its citizens. Nutrition labelling is one method of informing consumers about the composition of foods and also of helping them to make an informed choice. Education and information campaigns are also an important mechanism for improving consumer understanding of food information. There should not be interference in all respects, however, and that is why it is important that the sale of food at charity events or fairs, for example, should not fall within the scope of this regulation."@en1
