"Mr President, first of all, I would like to thank the Chair of the Committee for his commitment to his task. It is a pity that this Committee did not receive greater public attention. I agree on many points with what Mr Karas and Mr Schmidt have said – we do indeed need more Europe in very key areas. However, the call for a 5% increase in our budget is extremely unfortunate. People will have great difficulty understanding this because it seems as if we are putting the cart before the horse.
First, we need the reforms that should really have been brought forward in the Treaty of Maastricht, or the Treaty of Nice at the latest, but that have still not materialised. Only then can we discuss other forms of income and, in particular, increased income. I believe we would have shown real courage if we had said, ‘let us break up the big banks’. Let us get to work at the point where the crisis really began, rather than simply looking for funds for the European Union."@en1
