Following the publication of the Commission Green Paper, I agree with most of the ideas introduced by this own-initiative report on the future of EU development policy, both because of its in-depth analysis of already existing policies, and – mainly – because of the stress it places on the need to increase its impact on the current socio-economic situation. The report proposes making development cooperation policy more effective by analysing seven areas of activity: seven fundamental directions that I believe cover the areas key to the success of these policies. By way of example, I would stress the crucial importance given to human development by increasing support for basic social services like education and health. That is the only way they will earn Official Development Assistance (ODA), thus promoting real and sustained development. I would also stress the importance of private sector involvement as a means of creating new jobs and promoting the creation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). I believe this report stands out because of the objectives identified, which I consider well presented, joined-up and complementary: they provide for the maximisation of the positive impact of these policies on the people at whom they are directed."@en1
