"− The European budget is one of the most important aid instruments for developing countries. Used to reduce and eradicate poverty, and to implement the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), its use must be governed by principles of transparency. Given that financial transfers are made directly to the treasuries of developing countries, respect for human rights and compliance with minimum standards of governance should be ensured. The creation of control systems involving parliaments and civil society can guarantee greater effectiveness in the struggle for transparency and in combating corruption, without calling into question the interests of the people. I am voting in favour of the report for these reasons."@en1
