I voted for the motion for a resolution on the analysis of options to move beyond 20% greenhouse gas emission reductions and assessing the risk of carbon leakage, because I believe it is vital to push for a global agreement on the subject. The European Union is one of the main global players in terms of the environment, and a unilateral move to reduce carbon emissions would only risk further weakening the ability of European industries to compete on the international market. Furthermore, it is not certain that a unilateral move would lead to an equivalent agreement with the other major players on the global stage. In any case, a willingness to increase the target for greenhouse gas emissions reduction with respect to the EU 2020 strategy target exists in the House, even if it was not followed up by concrete results at voting time."@en1
