".
I did not support the report on the analysis of options to move beyond 20% greenhouse gas emission reductions and assessing the risk of carbon leakage, because I consider that it would place a disproportionate burden on European businesses at a time when the economic recovery has only just begun. The European Union has already agreed on a 20% greenhouse gas emission reduction by 2020. This target has been set and it is quite evident that it will be achieved. There are no grounds for changing this target half-way down the road. There is no doubt that more substantial emission reductions will be beneficial for the environment and are essential, but any steps we take in this direction must be considered and must take into account the interests of all parties involved. Moreover, those steps should not adversely affect the global competitiveness of European businesses, so as to prevent businesses from relocating their manufacturing outside Europe, with a consequent loss of jobs."@en1
