In today’s vote, the European Parliament decided to reject the report on increasing yet further the recently-adopted CO
emissions reduction target of 20%. I was pleased at the outcome of this vote, which sends out a strong message that decisions to increase CO
emissions reduction targets should not be taken by the EU Member States alone. Emissions from European countries account for around 10% of global emissions. Unless action is taken by other international partners, and in particular the largest economies in the world, there will be no question of genuinely achieving greenhouse gas emissions targets. All decisions regarding further action under the emissions reduction policy should take into account the competitiveness of European industry and the risk of production being transferred to countries outside the EU, which do not impose targets upon themselves that are as ambitious as the EU’s emissions reduction targets."@en1
