"− I voted for Mr Eickhout’s report following the votes on the amendments, because it seemed to me to be a good compromise text, in the view of the fact that we are dealing with some positions that are highly compromised by ideological environmentalism and lacking any sense of realism. There are not adequate grounds for drastically increasing the EU objective of reducing emissions by 2020, and in any case these should be based on accurate tests and a detailed analysis of the implications in terms of costs. This is even more the case at a time of a historic crisis in which too many European enterprises are closing, and too many others are struggling due to the restrictions of the credit squeeze and competition from emerging countries. Imposing additional environmental restrictions on them would mean creating more problems for them. Rejection of the final text will inevitably lead to a new period of difficult negotiation, which we will only be able to overcome successfully if we manage to combine achievable environmental objectives with support for the productivity of enterprises."@en1
