"On behalf of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, I would like to declare unambiguously that we recognise all the rights of EU Member States to make their own laws, and we do not want to criticise either Hungary or, above all, the citizens of Hungary. The aim of our comments and concerns is not to criticise Hungary and Hungarian citizens, but we firmly believe in the protection of fundamental rights, civic freedoms and our shared European values, as well as peace, security and decent coexistence. All of these values should be preserved. In contrast to our fellow Members from
and ignoring the almost monarchist ideas that pervade the spirit of the preamble, the areas we regard as being highly sensitive include, for example, the previously-mentioned principle for adopting the constitution. It is not very normal in democratic countries for a consultation process to last only five weeks. It is not normal for the opposition to take no part in it. The powers of the Constitutional Court have been restricted, and the nature of the proceedings relating to members of sexual minorities is also discriminatory, as the constitution explicitly fails to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. The mission of the European Union is surely for us to live together as nations and as states of the European Union in peace, cooperation and mutual respect. It is hard to see how the countries directly affected can accept the revised Hungarian Constitution."@en1
