"Mr President, regarding this report by Mr Eickhout, I want to say that we certainly all agree that we have to do our best to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
We in Europe are committed to the EU’s 20-20-20 target, and this is enough. We need to insist that the rest of the world should be involved in all this. We must remember that Europe’s emissions are around 10% of those for the whole world. If we consider European jobs and industry, we have to ensure that they can be kept here.
If we establish new, tighter targets every year, industry will not be able to respond to them. We have to establish clear targets and objectives, such as the 20-20-20 target, and go with them, instead of jumping from one to another, causing uncertainty. We need European industry: it is committed to the 20-20-20 targets; and we should keep to that and, furthermore, persuade the rest of the world to be involved in environmental cooperation."@en1
