"Mr President, less than 50% of secondary school leavers in Romania passed the leaving certificate exam this year. These are the poorest results in the last 20 years. It is no coincidence that this is happening under a government which has awarded education the lowest percentage of GDP in the last 20 years: 2.73% as opposed to 6%, as stipulated by law. It is also the smallest budget allocation for education in the whole European Union. This year teachers saw their salaries drop by up to 60%. Many teaching staff have chosen to leave the system in order to survive. There has been no investment at all in this education system during the last two years. Major decisions, such as school closures, have been made without any consultation with parents, teachers, trade unions or European partners. All this is going on at a time when the European Union should be targeting the Europe 2020 programme’s objectives, which also include the promotion of knowledge, innovation and education."@en1
