"Mr President, during the plenary session last month, the European Parliament strongly condemned the Ukrainian Government’s practices of influencing the judicial system with the aim of compromising the opposition leaders, by adopting an emergency resolution.
I wish to point out that these kinds of practices, perhaps even worse than this, are not only going on outside the European Union, but also in Romania, an EU Member State. The current government has managed to take control of part of the state judicial system for its own political interests. President Băsescu does not miss any opportunity to demonstrate this, by giving sneak previews of criminal prosecutions, inquiries and arrests being launched. Fabricating cases against the leaders of the opposition on government orders and selective criminal prosecutions are, unfortunately, generally widespread practices in Romania. The European Parliament must condemn the Romanian Government’s practices which are jeopardising the rule of law and democracy by adopting a resolution, just as it did in the case of Ukraine."@en1
