lpv:translated text	"Mr President, the Greek Parliament has approved a new package of austerity measures with severe consequences for the living conditions of the people and the economy of the country. It was the European Union that imposed this programme; the Union is also responsible. Last week in Portugal, the Portuguese Parliament approved the government’s programme, and the government took advantage of the moment to announce an extraordinary tax which will see half of people’s Christmas bonus taken away. In order to deal with the deficit, there is no hesitation to worsen the recession in which my country already finds itself. The Union, Europe, is also responsible because the authorities’ obsession with the deficit stems from there. However, in contrast to these recessive policies, the Irish Government announced a reduction in VAT for restaurants, hotels and the leisure industry. My question is this: why is it impossible in Portugal and Greece to do what is possible and desirable in Ireland? If the authorities in these tourist countries wished to lower VAT, would the European Commission take Irish case law into account?"@en1
