The quality of the products we eat and the way in which they are produced have fundamental significance for our health, and this is therefore why the health of the European Union’s citizens should be an important aspect of our agricultural policy. By introducing a more informed common agricultural policy, we will be able to be more effective in combating the diseases of civilisation associated with an unhealthy lifestyle and poor diet. Obesity, diabetes, cancers and different forms of circulatory disease are a real threat to the citizens. Statistical data show that every year cardiovascular disease is the cause of around 4.3 million deaths in Europe, and over 1.7 million people die of cancer. I think the report on the CAP towards 2020: meeting the food, natural resources and territorial challenges of the future is moving in the wrong direction, so I voted against it."@en1
