".
I welcomed this document, because it sets out an EU legal framework for spent fuel and radioactive waste management. The proposal lays down specific requirements to ensure that Member States establish a national regulatory and organisational framework and draw up appropriate national programmes for spent fuel and radioactive waste management, from their generation to their disposal. The management of spent fuel and radioactive waste is particularly important, both for the environment and for public safety. However, we cannot guarantee safety without the appropriate funding, and I therefore believe that the decommissioning of nuclear power plants like Ignalina should not just be a concern for one Member State, in this case Lithuania, but for the whole of Europe."@en1
